For this academic year, we decided to start off with the theme work – I love China. Unlike any other year, our focus was on Chinese food. We explored both traditional and popular Chinese cuisine.

During the first two weeks, we explored ten popular Chinese cuisine such as Peking duck, Chow Mein and dumplings. The students also watched how each dish is cooked. In class, we shared our favorite Chinese food, explained why they are our favorite and how to cook them. On the third week, students were given a task to write a composition about the theme. They were asked to write about their favorite Chinese food or Chinese restaurant. The students were given a word limit to draft a composition. Once their work was completed and checked, students were asked to re-write their composition onto a worksheet and decorate it to be displayed on the school’s hall way.

For the second phase of the theme work, each grade was assigned a province in China to explore. Upon exploring the province, students had a task to write about the province and what they have understood from the lesson. They were also required to find further information and interesting facts about their assigned province.

Most students expressed how much they have learnt as many unfamiliar to the English translation of the Chinese food. They’ve also learnt fun facts about the province they were assigned to and was able to write about it. This was an enjoyable and educational theme as we all had fun learning.
