For the 2023 spring semester, our first major topic was sports. For Grade One, Two and Three, the first subtopic within sports was amazing athletes. This meant exposing students to more out-of-the-ordinary sports such as fencing and weightlifting, and examining what skills are necessary to succeed in them. After, we looked into sports equipment. This meant investigating which gear was necessary to play different sports. Following this, grade one and two students were introduced to what a school sports day may be like. We explored the many fun activities that might take place, as well as the importance of good sportsmanship. For Grade One and Two the final subtopic revolved around sports sites. In other words, the settings that different sports may take place in. Instead of sports day and sports sites for Grade Three, they received an appropriately leveled up lessons on The Olympic Games, followed by a deep dive into different sports arenas. We concluded the topic with a group project meant to tie together the knowledge obtained throughout.

For Grade Four and Five, our first major topic was sports. Before we started to introduce the students to new sports, we started by having the students create posters of sport they already knew about. This was for them to call upon what they know and be more familiar with the topic going forward. The first subtopic within sports was the Olympics. We started with the Olympics so the students could have something familiar to talk about, but maybe something they haven’t really explored much. After, we looked into the sport of Hockey for Grade 4. This meant investigating which gear was necessary to play the sport, as well as where it is played and the basic rules. Following this, students were introduced to a more modern sport, skateboarding. We not only discussed how to participate in the sport, but also the importance of wearing helmets and other protective equipment. The final subtopic revolved around the sport of Formula 1 racing. We focused on how this is a team event rather than an individual. Group work is important to any individual’s success. We concluded the topic with a group project meant to tie together the knowledge obtained throughout. For Grade Five, , we looked into the Winter Olympics. This was meant for students to understand the similarities and differences of sports from around the world. Following this, students were introduced to a competition that the most likely hadn’t heard of the X Games. We not only discussed how to participate in the sports, but also the importance of safety and wearing protective equipment. The final subtopic revolved around the future of sports, Esports. We focused on how this sport is becoming more and more popular, and what sports may look like in the not-too-distant future. Group work is important to any individual’s success, so we concluded the topic with a group project meant to tie together the knowledge obtained throughout.
