During the time we taught the theme ‘I love China’, we explored various aspect of China. We explored the Chinese culture, tradition, stories, its history and provinces.

During the first few weeks, grade 5 classes focused on Chinese traditional stories. Students were introduced to some of the famous Chinese stories, such as Pangu, Jingwei trying to fill up the sea among others. The introduction to the lesson took place through the use of Powerpoint Presentations, worksheets and short videos to enable clear visualization of the stories. Following the introduction, students were asked to prepare a performance based on the story of‘Jingwei trying to fill up the sea.’ In their groups, students practiced the play and performed in their classrooms. It was evident that our students were having a great time.

After the first half of the theme work, each grade was assigned a province in China. Our grade 5 students were assigned Sichuan province. We explored the various places to see and do in Sichuan as well as its famous food. Students had an opportunity to watch a short clip of the province to have a glimpse of life what life is like in Sichuan Province. The lesson facilitated those who have already visited the province to share their experience and knowledge of the province. Students were able to share and educate others about life in Sichuan and what they consider to be the best things to do and see.

The lesson opened the class to a discussion about the Chinese culture, tradition as well as the food and its history. Students were provided with a worksheet to complete the places they would like to see and things to do should an opportunity be given to them to travel to Sichuan Province. They were also asked to attached or draw to the worksheet anything they found fascinating about the province to share with the class.

This was truly an amazing lesson for both the teacher and students. We look forward to discovering other provinces across China.
