For younger students, they learn about Shanghai and Tibet. Students read about the geography of Tibet, such as the Yarlung Zangbo River. They were made familiar with its high altitude and mountainous terrain. They also learned about the capital city of Tibet, Lhasa, and its famous Potala Palace. Students were exposed to the rich and vibrant Tibetan culture, including their colorful clothes and special dances.
Ang they also read about Shanghai’s interesting geography. They learnt about Shanghai’s most important river, the Huangpu River. They simulated a cruise along the river while stopping by some of its most iconic sites, such as lujiazui. Students also became familiar with the west bund and new bund areas, as well as Shanghai’s only mountainous area, Sheshan.
In grade 4, we head over to the island of taiwan. They learnt the basics about the island, such as size, population, resources, climate, background and tourism. Within tourism they looked at some important famous spots; including taipei 101, the palace musum of taipei, the sun moon lake and alishan (ali mountain). They then continued and looked at the importance of local night food markets and some gourmet or speciality food found in the area; including oyster omelets, braised pork rice (luroufan) and scallion pancakes. Finally, they looked at some minority groups; including the gaoshan nationality. They learnt about the background, culture, work and local activities of this community,In grade 5, we followed the yellow river. They learnt the basics about the river; including the basic geography, size, background, importance, and important cities on route. Then they looked at the diversity of food along the yellow river, such as wheat, millet, barley, rice and fish. Then they continued to the wei river valley, including an introduction to the basic geography, history and civilisation. Next, they continued to the fen river, again including an introduction to the basic geography, history and civilisation. Following this was an introduction to a speciality food on the yellow river, the yellow river carp. Finally, they finished on mount tai, with an introduction to the basic geography and history.
