On October 30th we had a class about Halloween. We began the class with a brainstorm session of all vocabulary known about Halloween. I invited students to share their thoughts and costume ideas for Halloween. We then watched a short video to introduce the key characters of Halloween, ‘a witch, a ghost, a monster, a vampire..’ etc. I paused the video at different intervals to elicit the characters from memory and concept check each character, ‘What does a vampire do?’, ‘What does a ghost say?’

Through a power point I introduced the stages of carving a pumpkin to make a Jack o’ lantern. We looked at different styles of faces for pumpkins, scary pumpkins, happy pumpkins, cute pumpkins, funny pumpkins. Students were then given a worksheet to create their own Jack o’ lantern picture. As an incentive, students were told that two pictures would be chosen as winners and receive a prize.

We learnt a cheeky chant, I remembered as a child, ‘Trick or treat, trick or treat, give me something good to eat.’ We drilled this chorally several times, as I encouraged the students to make scary faces and use scary voices to animate the chant. We finally made a short video of our chant to send to the parents and wish everyone a happy Halloween.

Students were asked to complete their Jack o’ lantern pictures at home, if they had not completed it in class. I chose the best pictures based on creativity and was overwhelmed with the students’ efforts. With the winners chosen I awarded the students with a fitting prize, a scary Halloween snake.
