Our semester is ending with the topic ‘Careers’. Within this topic, students have explored Civil Servants, S.T.E.M Careers, The Business Setting and Strange/Bizarre Jobs. The main aim for this topic is for students to expose them to different career types and get them starting to think what they might like to do when they are older. These things will then be collated onto individual posters and displayed.

   ‘Careers’ is divided into four sub-categories. The first of these sub-categories is all about Civil Servants. Students will be introduced to some new civil servant, or helpful jobs, and will be encouraged to also talk and write about their own that they know. In Grade four they will look at a Mayor, Accountant, Judge, Chief of Police and City Planner. In Grade five they will look at Mayor, Civil Engineer, Judge and Treasurer.

   The second of these sub-categories is all about S.T.E.M jobs. Students will be introduced to some new Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematic jobs and again, will be encouraged to also talk and write about their own that they know. In Grade four they will look at a Biochemist, Computer Programmer, Aerospace Engineer, Mathematics and Robotics Engineer. In Grade five they will look at Science Careers, Technology Careers, Engineering Careers and Mathematics Careers.

   The third of these sub-categories is all about The Business Setting. Students will be introduced to a basic hierarchy of a business, including corporate executives, and again, will be encouraged to also talk and write about their own that they know. In Grade four they will look at Corporate Executives, Human Resources, Marketing, Sales, IT and Finance. In Grade five they will look at the Board of Directors, Chief Executive Officer, Chief Operating Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Mid-Level Management and Entry-Level Management.

   The fourth of these sub-categories is all about Weird or Bizarre Jobs.. Students will be introduced to some unique jobs, to spark interest and encourage curiosity when choosing a career, and again, will be encouraged to also talk and write about their own that they know. In Grade four they will look at a Pet Food Tester, Face Feeler, Professional Surfer, Gumologist, Stunt Double and Skydiving Instructor. In Grade five they will look at Snake Milker, Color Expert, Veterinary Acupuncturist, Voice Actor, Deep Sea Welder,  Professional Bull Rider and Video Game Tester.
