April’s theme was ‘I love Shanghai’. We’ve chosen this topic to help the kids understand their hometown better and also to discuss city life in general. How to get around in a big city? How to ask directions? What are the famous buildings and who are the famous people that were born or live in Shanghai? What do students prefer – big city life or living closer to nature? Do the kids see themselves as citizens of Shanghai in the future? How they see Shanghai in 20 years? These and more questions have been discussed with the students within the Shanghai theme work.
Students of grade 1 and 2 have done a creative project – they dreamt about themselves in 20 years. The students filled out the worksheets where they mentioned what they do, who they are, and how they live in the future.
In classes with Grade 3 we discussed different places around the city. After the students wrote an essay in which they introduced Shanghai to a traveler that doesn’t know much about the city.
Grades 4 and 5 also took a part in creating a travel guide for tourists. The students learnt the names of famous Shanghai buildings in English, made notes about their favorite places around the city. Everyone found some advantages and disadvantages of living in a big metropolis like Shanghai. They’ve used critical thinking to write tips for a traveler, such as ‘learn basic vocabulary in Chinese’,’ bring sunglasses’, ‘be ready for very cold weather in winter’ etc.
