We started the school year with the theme ‘I love China’. The theme was carried through until mid October so it felt fitting to tie it in with China’s national holiday at the start of October. It also gave students the opportunity to express themselves orally about a topic they were very familiar with too.
-
Our school’s feature wall consisted of lots of traditional elements, a flag, a map, Chinese fans, opera masks, paper cutting and Chinese knots. Students were engaged and keen to share their knowledge of all the items. It was a great conversation starter and introduced our theme very appropriately.
-
In the classroom my ‘I love China’ poster centered on the topic of ‘regions’. As well as a map of China broken up in to the individual provinces, it included food, traditions and facts about the different regions. Students had a wealth of knowledge about provinces and cities I had never even heard of. They showed me the provinces their families were from, places they had visited and landmarks I should go and see.
-
During our theme work lesson we looked at some different regions in more detail. For example, we discussed Heilongjiang province, first inviting students to share their experience and then focusing on some key areas, traditions, capital cities, population, food and landmarks.
-
Students were then asked to choose a province of personal interest and complete a short description of it. From Xinjiang to Guangzhou, the students chose an array of regions. From the mushrooms of Yunnan to the silk of Suzhou, they talked about traditions from all over China.
-
In our second project, we discussed Chinese inventions. Many people know that silk, paper and gunpowder are all Chinese creations, but there are many more inventions from this country. Students were asked to investigate and choose one invention to present to the class.
-
It has been a great theme to start the year.
