Football, basketball, badminton, baseball…these are all common kinds of sports familiar to all the students. But have you ever heard of Headis? Do you know underwater hockey? On April 19th, our foreign teachers, Ms. Ninie and Ms. Rachael, gave the Grade 3 & 4 students a lecture on “Weird sports from around the world”.
The teachers introduced many different weird sports the students had never seen before in various interesting ways, such as ostrich racing, Bo-taoshi, rabbit show jumping and so on.
First, the teachers showed the students some pictures of recognizable sports to get students to think about what sports might be introduced. Next, the teachers introduced a short description, including the definition of the sport, some information, interesting facts and rules about them. Then the students watched some exciting videos of these sports to create a deeper understanding. They were so fascinated by these videos. When the players in the video won, they would cheer for them.
Through this speech, the students not only practiced their English, they expanded their knowledge about sports and it introduced them to sports they’d never heard of before. It was a really a good way for students to expand their horizons in a fun and creative way.
