This month we held a series of activities about science. We focused mainly on Space and the solar system.
The introduction of the theme was about different constituents of Space; the solar system and other bodies in Space. The students were able to define the terms associated with space, and name the different planets. They were also able to describe the planet’s appearance and state important facts about each one.
Apart from learning about Space, the students also did some STEM experiments. The Grade 1 students planted seeds, as this was a topic that they were learning about in Science. They already had knowledge of the procedure to be followed when planting seeds. A brief review was done at the beginning of the lesson. They planted the seeds in groups of three. Each student got the opportunity to take part in the experiment. The seeds were planted very well, as they began to sprout a few days later. The Grade 2 students created the solar system / rubber band planets in groups of six. They were first made aware of the purpose of the activity and then instructions on what they needed and how they were to complete the task. The students showed great enthusiasm and determination. I was especially impressed by their ability to work together as a group. They managed to complete the task very well. Did you know that you can make a battery using lemons? The Grade 5 students did lemon battery this month. With just five lemons, some coins, screws, and leads, they managed to make an electric current flow around a circuit with enough energy to illuminate a small lamp called a light emitting diode.
All the students enjoyed the STEM lessons, this was a fun way of getting them to engage in learning about Science.
